NetApp is “all in” on the public clouds as they believe that most IT departments will leverage the cloud for at least some of their IT services moving forward. Much like they built a better Windows File Server than Microsoft back in the 90s they are now building services that add value to the solutions provided by the major public cloud providers – Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Equally importantly they recognise that most organisations are looking for a multi-cloud strategy, with one of the clouds being an on-premises private cloud, with the ability to easily move data between them.
Let’s take a quick look at what has evolved into a very comprehensive portfolio of cloud based solutions:
Cloud Volumes ONTAP
A virtual version of a FAS array that runs in AWS, Azure and GCP to provide the following benefits:
- High Availability within and across zones
- Support for multiple protocols (SMB, NFS and iSCSI)
- Reduced storage costs as a result of the compression, de-duplication, snapshot and cloning capabilities
- Efficient snapshots and clones for backup and parallel processing
- Integrated backup to object storage (requires Cloud Backup Service)
- Multi-cloud replication to other virtual or physical ONTAP instances using SnapMirror
Cloud Tiering Service
Reduces costs by utilising the FabricPool feature of ONTAP to automatically tier inactive data from flash storage on physical FAS arrays to cloud or on-premises object storage.
Identifies and categories personal and sensitive data using advanced AI algorithms, provides a data privacy status dashboard, produces compliance reports for GDPR, PCI, HIPPA and CCPA, and provides the ability to search for a specific users files in response to a data subject access request.
Cloud Compliance is included free of charge with Cloud Volumes ONTAP.
Monitors a multi-cloud infrastructure, including servers, storage, switches, hypervisors, VMs and applications. It helps to control costs by identifying waste, improves availability by identifying the root cause of problems and identifies insider security threats, such as ransomware, using advanced machine learning algorithms to automatically uncover unusual file activity.
For a huge number of organisations Office 365 has been their first significant exposure to public cloud services, but what many do not realise is that it doesn’t come with a comprehensive backup solution. The fact is that if organisations want the level of protection and granular recovery that they have with their on-premises applications they will need to implement a 3rd party backup solution.
SaaS Backup is available for Office 365 (Exchange, SharePoint, Groups, Teams and OneDrive for Business) and Salesforce.
Continuously synchronises NFS and SMB files to/from S3 object storage residing on private and public clouds.
Global File Cache
Improves collaboration by enabling high performance global file sharing with real-time distributed file locking using centralised cloud based shares and a Virtual File Share and Intelligent File Cache at each of the locations that require access to the files.
The technology came from the recent acquisition of Talon Storage.
Virtual Desktop Service
Provides a more cost effective VDI solution than VMware and Citrix whilst delivering the security, user experience and choice of public clouds that organisations need.
The technology came from the recent acquisition of CloudJumper.
As can be seen from the above image NetApp has built a very comprehensive portfolio of cloud services and no matter where you are on your cloud journey it’s worth taking a look at how their solutions could help your organisation – maybe you just need the most cloud integrated storage or you would benefit from the cloud based services such as Virtual Desktops, Office 365 backup or multi-cloud monitoring.
