Challenge

The Network Team at Havering were well aware of the benefits and enhancements that a Virtual Infrastructure could bring and, with the help of SNS, Havering College implemented their first VMware Infrastructure in 2006 based on low cost EMC CLARiiON AX storage arrays. Thirty physical servers were consolidated onto three VMware ESX servers resulting in a considerable reduction in power utilisation and ongoing management.

Initially just non-critical systems were virtualised, but as the solution proved to be so beneficial, the college decided that moving forward all systems would be virtualised therefore a new high performance server and storage infrastructure was required.

In addition the current disaster recovery solution required re-building systems and restoring data from tape. This would give the college a Recovery Time Objective measured in days and a Recovery Point Objective based on the last successful backup.

The recovery process required an enormous number of manual steps and was not easy to test on a large scale. A repeatable, easy to manage disaster recovery solution was therefore required that would deliver a Recovery Point Objective and Recovery Time Objective of less than one hour.

Solution

VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager was chosen based on its ability to provide:

  • Accelerated recovery to ensure that Recovery Time Objectives can be met
  • Automated recovery to ensure the accuracy of recovery plan execution
  • Easy, thorough, non-disruptive and frequent recovery plan testing
  • Reliable recovery by eliminating common causes of failure

EMC CLARiiON CX array was chosen based on the following:

  • Availability - a virtual infrastructure is only as reliable as its storage platform
  • Scalability - it needs to support the colleges needs today and well into the future
  • Connectivity options - FC and iSCSI provide maximum flexibility
  • Advanced features - snapshots, clones & replication for backup and disaster recovery
  • VMware API support - vCenter Site Recovery Manager and Multipathing

SNS services were chosen based on their ability to provide:

  • A proven track record in the field of virtualisation and disaster recovery
  • VMware and EMC pre-sales expertise
  • A detailed understanding of the college's needs
  • Delivery of the most appropriate and cost-effective solution
  • Certified and experienced VMware and EMC engineers
  • A documented project plan that keeps the college in control
  • Detailed deployment documentation to aid the college in troubleshooting
  • Post deployment training to enable the college to support the infrastructure

Objectives

The key objectives for the project were as follows:

  • Implement three EMC CLARiiON CX arrays, two onsite and one at a remote location for DR
  • Implement synchronous replication between two EMC CLARiiON CX arrays at the main site
  • Implement an EMC CLARiiON CX array for DR purposes at a second campus
  • Implement asynchronous replication over IP between the arrays on each campus
  • Integrate the EMC CLARiiON CX arrays into the existing virtual infrastructure
  • Implement a new virtual infrastructure and migrate existing virtual machines
  • Implement VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager with the MirrorView adaptor
  • Provide comprehensive knowledge transfer and documentation

CUSTOMER QUOTE

Our main reason for choosing EMC technology was due to its high availability and optimisation for VMware environments. We also felt EMC had a lot to offer when looking at the broader picture such as backup, archiving and deduplication technologies.

Finding a partner to work with that instils confidence is a rarity in today's market, we found SNS's technical knowledge regarding EMC and VMware outstanding. This has been of huge benefit to the college, helping us to cut costs, improve response times and enhance our overall service to the user community.
