The Network Team at Havering were well aware
of the benefits and enhancements that a Virtual
Infrastructure could bring and, with the help
of SNS, Havering College implemented their first
VMware Infrastructure in 2006 based on low cost
EMC CLARiiON AX storage arrays. Thirty physical
servers were consolidated onto three VMware ESX
servers resulting in a considerable reduction
in power utilisation and ongoing management.
Initially just non-critical systems were virtualised,
but as the solution proved to be so beneficial,
the college decided that moving forward all systems
would be virtualised therefore a new high performance
server and storage infrastructure was required.
In addition the current disaster recovery solution
required re-building systems and restoring data
from tape. This would give the college a Recovery
Time Objective measured in days and a Recovery
Point Objective based on the last successful backup.
The recovery process required an enormous number
of manual steps and was not easy to test on a
large scale. A repeatable, easy to manage disaster
recovery solution was therefore required that
would deliver a Recovery Point Objective and Recovery
Time Objective of less than one hour.
